organism attached to small rock

#1 Post by J_WISC » Mon Feb 12, 2024 3:28 am

Hello.

Can someone help identify this organism attached to a small rock? I found the rock on a path along a lake in central Wisconsin, USA. I don't know whether it's a local rock or fill brought in for the path. I assume it's a fresh water creature. I picked up the rock because it's sparkly and was surprised to find more than crystals on closer inspection.

I believe it's about 170 μm diameter. Illuminated from lower right corner. Afocal, using iPhone and dissecting scope, total magnification 72x. The 6x pair of objectives turned out to be a rewarding impulse buy; I might need a pair of 8x objectives.
