Intruder creature on Volvox slide

#1 Post by arthur.tarso » Tue Jul 17, 2018 1:39 pm

Hi folks,

I purchased a set of prepared slides from China and I'm studying each one to increase my knowledge on microscopic life. One of the slides is named as Volvox W.M. (What does W.M. stands for?).
I googled Volvox to know what I was looking at, but there is this other creature in red on the same slide.
Does anyone know what is this red creature?

Looks like a Daphnia, but I wonder about the red coloration - is this natural? or is it after post processing?

The slide was colored artificially, the Volvox were colored blue and this creature red. But I have no idea on how they do it.

W.M. stands for Whole Mount. It means that all of the subject is present on the slide.

Here is a partial list:

Abbreviation Meaning

wm ..................Whole mount (entire specimen or organism)

st .....................Stained

ls .....................Longitudinal section

cs ....................Cross-section

sec ...................Section

sm ....................Smear

sq .....................Squashed preparation
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)
