Freshwater Pond Critter

#1 Post by Grahame » Tue Aug 07, 2018 7:18 am

Hi Folks,
Can anyone point me in the right direction for an id of these critters ?
They look like an embryo to me.
They're attached to the algae by a triangular tether.
Approximately 30 - 40 microns.
There's nothing in the water sample that is big enough to lay these, plenty of rotifers a few vorticella many smaller stuff.
The bigger one is a crop.
The 2nd one is a real heavy crop.
Is the 3rd image possibly what it turns into or is it something completely different ( which is what I suspect )
Thanks for any help

Interesting thought Bruce.
I know what they are in a terrestrial sense but hadn't thought of them as aquatic.
A quick google doesn't turn up much but will have a better look later.
I also spy that the first image seems to have gone missing from this post, no biggie, it didn't have any detail to it.
Cheers

I don't know much about algae, so I'm just throwing out suggestions. :) A chytrid sporangium seems possible. I know some water moulds attack Mougeotia etc.

Thanks Bruce,
That's a whole bundle of mysteries solved :)
I hadn't heard of chytrid sporangium.
But a read of wiki and a google image search has provided answers to many questions.
I had thought the "round brown things" were some sort of parasite.
Here's the wiki article for those interested.
