What is this?

Can someone identify this organism? Both of the photos show cells from it (I believe it's an algae), however, the second looks like a cell of spirogyra while the first is strange. The specimen was obtained from fresh pond water.

a species of spirogyra, most likely.

The cell in the first image looks damaged. If you look at the one next to it you can see that it is in fact spirogyra as well.
It is quite common for the end cells in Filamentous Algae to suffer damage. In the first image the contents appear to be spilling out of the torn cell wall.
