Vorticella?

#1 Post by geos » Tue Jan 01, 2019 7:59 am

Can anyone identify these cilliates? I find them attached to algal clumps sweeping up food. As their lower half is always
obscured I can't tell if they have a stalk or not. I've never seen them contract (or move). First image 10x objective, second 40x.

I imagine you were looking for a simpler answer than this: https://archive.org/details/1935AlfredK ... nsAndIndex

on the other hand it pretty much has to be there :)

It is in German but the drawings are excellent and the names even if some have changed should lead you to your goal.

Do note that size is an important clue in discovering an ID.

Thanks for the link. I've had a quick look and downloaded it - should find it there.

After looking through Kahl and referencing the net it appears they are scyphidia, probably "constricta".
