Hi 92111,
I would say it is a vorticella which has shed it's looking for pastures new, or is about to encyst.
Peter.

I agree that it looks like something that has detached, but not a peritrich like Vorticella. They have much finer oral cilia than the membranelles seen here, and mobile stages typically have one ring of conspicuous body cilia.

It can be helpful to know where such things are from and how large they are. In this case, I think the colouring marks it as a Stentor multiformis, which are 100-400 μm. Stentor are trumpet-shaped when extended but can also contract into globs like this; the characteristic bluish pigment is shared with S. coeruleus but those do not have round macronuclei and are much larger.

He is claiming a magnification of 400X, which wouldn't exactly be what we are seeing on the monitor. However, one would assume therefore, a 40X objective with the video covering maybe 1/2 the field?? Is that about right, 92111? Stentor Muelleri would be roughly that size and could be blocky enough to fit the bill, if so.

I agree with Josh! :D It's definitely a heterotrich. The compact, central macronucleus and bluish pigment strongly indicate Stentor multiformis.

S. muelleri is unpigmented, and has a macronucleus like a string of beads.

Not that I have any strong conviction or extensive knowledge, but have you considered a strombidium.
Looks similar to me.
