If the question meant "is it?" - it looks like a diatom. They are quite large at the west side of the pool and their relatives/colleagues remain fairly small at the east side...

If the question meant "ID ?" - following the Licmophora experience, once this one sheds its green-golden robe, the view of the striae will aid identification :)

Thanks Hobbyst46, I suppose it was two questions in one.

Have not kept the slide so no future installment to the mystery from that source. Perhaps I will run into another at some point and get a little more detail.

I wonder if what we are seeing is the process of reproduction by binary fission.

Thanks Francisco, found this:

Not sure how much light it sheds on the reproduction question

Thanks KurtM

your tip got me searching again and I think I found a closer suspect: Thalassiophysa hyalina

What do you think?

Now there's one I'm totally unfamiliar with. Let's look into it and see if we can tag this guy. And you only found one? What size sample and from where - benthic, planktonic, or ? Or were you in the marina scraping mooring lines again? 8-) Do keep an eye out for others.

According to algaebase - Thalassiophysa rhipidis Conger and Thalassiophysa hyalina (Greville) Paddock & P.A.Sims are currently accepted names. see links below

Sorry I have no clue, just wanted to say its a great quality shot as the rest of your diatom photos. Keep up the good work! This is taken with 40/0,65 plan DIC?

Yes, it was taken using the Plan 40x/0.65 DIC slider and the designated 40x/0.65 Plan Objective.

That 40x objective works surprisingly well for a 0.65

I would like at some point to try something with a higher NA but still dry.

True, I remember some other photos you posted (of Licmophora I think) taken with the same lens and they look excellent in my opinion. Occasionally you can find the Zeiss Jena 40/0.95 Apo objective on the German ebay for well below 100 EUR and I personally really like this objective. It produces a surprisingly flat field and the image quality is quite satisfying. It would probably combine well with your existing DIC setup for the 40/0.65 objective.

Thanks Wes, just making sure what it looked like!

It is 45mm DIN standard right?

Correct. It fits well on a turret with Zeiss West objectives. Combined adjustment of its coverslip correction collar, Optovar magnification and light color temperature/wavelength can yield remarkable detail for a dry objective.
