Please help with identification of 3 organisms

#1 Post by mazo4033 » Mon Jun 15, 2020 6:59 pm

Hello everyone!

I was looking at a soil sample that mostly had what looked to be diatoms in it. However, there were three organisms I saw that I hadn't seen before. All of these photos attached below were taken at 400x magnification on a light microscope.

1. This circular one, there were two that I saw. It is dark brown on the outside with a lighter shade of brown on the inside. It was immobile. Here is a picture:

Here's another picture, perhaps it shows the colors better:

(my apologizes for the poor quality of this photo)
From the second photo, it almost looks like a seed, but it was invisible to the naked eye.

2. Here is a second organism, the big circular one that looks like it is crushed:

3. And lastly, this organism that is clear and on top of what looks to be a diatom:

(I apologize for the poor quality of this photo, I wasn't able to use my camera at that moment so I had to use my phone)

Thank you so much!

I can't understand the dark ones at all. They don't look like organisms. The bottom looks like two things, one of which may be a rotifer.

Thank you, Don! I was suspecting rotifer for the last image (it is on top of the other organism, which I believe is a diatom), yet I do not see many distinct rotifer features and I feel like rotifers are bigger.
The dark circles are definitely a puzzle for me too, they look almost like seeds but would a seed be microscopic? I do not see microbe features on them. Maybe someone will know!

At that scale they could be seeds. What magnification did you use?

I used 400x magnification. I was looking around the forum and accidentally happened to come across this book that someone linked: https://www.amazon.com/PICTORIAL-ATLAS- ... oks&sr=1-2

If you look at the bottom left of the front cover, there is an image that closely resembles my picture. So perhaps it is a seed!

It's a pretty small seed then. It may be a spore.

I think we figured out the dark circle, then, although I wonder what species of seed it is. The other two organisms are still a mystery!

Hmm, the first three look a lot like a squashed & 'popped' pollen-grain, if they're between about 20-40µ diameter..
