AO darkf?ield condenser

#1 Post by Dale » Fri Dec 04, 2015 4:59 am

Found this on ebay. There is some obvious wear visible in the first photo, is it serious? Would it work
on an AO 10? Lastly, and dumbestly (?) does it sit on the base illuminators filter holder, or does it replace my
whole phase condenser?

It is an E-bay glitch. I have been getting it a lot lately.

It will work on a 10 but you won't have enough illumination to use the 100X objective. It's usefulness will be limited to the 20X and the 40X objective. The other device in there is a funnel stop to be used for either a 97X 1.25 N.A. 160mm objective or a cat.# 1079 100X 1.25 N.A infinity corrected objective. It's likely the earlier, because that condenser was made to be used on all of the microscopes from the series 15/35 in the 40's to the series 10/20 in the 60's. The dovetail was the same. The earlier condensers had purple velvet inside, so that funnel is probably for the 160mm scopes, not that you could use the infinity version anyway, due to lack of illumination.
The missing paint is due to the condenser having been put away with oil on it . It adheres to the liner and peels the paint off, if left for a long time to dry out. It's not absolutely necessary, I've used them with ground glass in that area but it could easily be replaced with a small brush and a bit of flat black enamel. There is probably a tiny amount of lost contrast, with that surround not being fully black.
