ooops Leitz 1512 Microtome

#1 Post by einman » Wed Jan 20, 2016 2:12 am

Well...
I really did not intend to purchase this microtome. I was admiring it on E-bay. So I thought I would make a lowball offer just to get a feel for what the seller really wanted for it. And..surprisingly he accepted my offer. What????

Anyway... It arrived in the largest box I have ever received from E-bay. Amazon or perhaps larger than anything I have ever purchased short of furniture.

It was well packed to say the least. It appears like new. Everything functions and operates smoothly as far as I can tell. I have not had the time to really check it out. It was after all a surprise.

Well it does have the quick release specimen holder I wanted for my AO 815.

Actually I do this regularly to get an idea of what the seller really wants for an item. Many expect you to lowball them and set the price accordingly. Others get angry when I do it. I offered him less than half his buy it now price. I try to offer a price I know will not be acceptable just to see what the "offer" will be.

So I will be selling one of my microtomes. Given the size of this one I will probably sell the 815 just because it will be easier to ship.

This really was an accident. I guess I can't complain except I was not planning on spending the money.

By that do you mean they get back to you with their minimum acceptable offer?

No they generally will respond with something lower than the buy it now. If they drop it substantially then I know the buy it now price is inflated. If they only move in a small increment than they are either annoyed or the buy it now price is not far from what they really want.

To some people make an offer means they are willing to sell for a few bucks less. Others are ready to wheel and deal.

This guy was ready to wheel and deal. He took my first offer.

From what I can tell it is like new cosmetically. I will be checking it out mechanically tonight just to determine all the controls are functioning as intended.

Of course you realise that the flower stalks take years to grow back. She might not thank you for sectioning one of those.

I find a good ruse is to stage an unfortunate 'accident', usually involving the dog as the fall-gal, then of course, as I pick-up the tragically dismembered plant I gravely ask if I may do the plant an honour and "immortalise it's parts" in the lab.... Oh dear, that sounds awful and a little weird now I see it written down..

The dog gets her pay-off later - 'meaty-treats' change hands and nothing's said! :D

Can't wait to see some sections! Exciting times ahead! :D

Though I have been itching to section a tapeworm specimen I have. Hopefully I will have some time to make that decision between traveling.
