Zeiss / "Jena" filter sets vintage? what are these types?

#1 Post by Delamington_lens » Sat Sep 03, 2016 9:03 am

Hello everyone,

I've been hunting around for some nice filters lately noticed some older 'Jena sets' including 27-32mm filter sets are floating around auctions online.
Nobody I speak to seems to know what zeiss equipment they are made for when asked, being "vintage or redundant."

Some others have mentioned vintage filters are usually delaminated anyway... If a set had mildew or de-lamination fungus, should one just bin the contaminated ones or retain the sets for value?

I hear many different opinions here and there and feel it's worth asking if filters can be restored.
(But I personally cannot see how with nd film filters as zeiss seems to have issues longterm.)

Thought I would ask the group if they have ever come across a set of 16x "carl zeiss jena" 32mm filter sets like this image attached which are arranged from ND filters / clear / to red blue etc

I've attached an image of a container set I saw online a little while back, looks like an 80's dental equipment casing...
just wondering if these sets are actually worth getting as the solid colours seem like zeiss tinted glass filters and pretty safe from any degradation.
Although the thick ones on the right look like nd /pass films....

They seem handy :)

Have not seen a set like that before.
The Jena in this case is probably post WW II which would make it East German Jena.

I bought an East German filter once - a diffuser - it was slightly oversize, 32.5mm I think.
I ended up holding it under a tap while using very fine wet and dry sandpaper (400 I seem to recall) to bring it down to 32mm. Fits well now.

Don't think filters if suffering from delamination (imagine those would be ND) can be restored.

Do not know how much use you will get out of a set like that even if they are all in good condition - then again if they are cheap have a go, might be fun.

Aus Jena filters are close to 33mm. They will not work in Zeiss West microscopes without cutting them own. It is easily dine in any optic shop where they grind eyeglasses lenses.
