Higher quality Microscope slide storage boxes

#1 Post by Delamington_lens » Wed Sep 28, 2016 1:41 pm

Does anybody have any recommendations for any 'reasonably' priced microscope slide boxes? (x50/x100+ standard and perhaps extra large pet/hist)

I'm looking for some well built slide boxes (not just stained pine.)
Trying to source some that are made with higher quality hardwoods like mahogany for example.
(For pleasing aesthetics and 'sentimental' value that would generally compliment various slide set collections.)

Not after any vintage sets, something nice clean and new. :)

PM me any recommendations ;)

Thanks :)

I have been drooling over these for a year. Best looking I have ever seen an the slides are stored horizontally (as they should). A bit pricey though. I saw one used cabinet a couple of months ago which was half price, but sold immediately.

They are not as big as you might think from the pictures and does not take much table space.

Have you considered having some made up for you?
You will get just what you want and you might find it is cheaper.

I have also considered ordering custom made boxes. Especially for my objectives, condensers, filters etc. I found a company that make custom boxes for Swedish manufacturers of fine instruments, gauges and tools and the quality is the best you can get, but unfortunately the price corresponds to that...

I had to order 10 boxes minimum and the price was aprox. $100 each including top coat, hinges, and locks.
I think the size was around : 10"x7"x2". Just as a reference for your decision process.

Of course, Sweden has expensive labour. U.S. would be slightly cheaper. If you look for wood shops in China and India, I guess the price will be 1/10, but quality would likely be an issue. I do not know how much time an experienced wood worker would have to spend on making such a box, but at least an hour with all the dove tails fittings, locks, hinges, and finally surface finish and putting the coat on, etc.

Oh nice these are all good examples and points, I'm having a look at them all and considering my options.

I didn't mean to sound so jaded ;)

I'm trying to plan ahead for better storage of various vintage optical equipment.
I can probably make some myself but customs may require some finesse.

Hmm cnc slotting custom blank/modular inner trays may be a practical option to remove labour costs, and sourcing the boxes another way (and slightly modifying them for a nicer finished product.)
