Fitting a Lomo 1.4 Aplanatic condenser to my microscope.

#1 Post by MicroMan2 » Tue Mar 14, 2017 3:53 pm

My lomo condenser has a protrusion that causes it to be unable to be fit to the mounting ring, what can i do to make it fit fully? My microscope is the Omax M82ES.

Photos of the problem areas might help.

Can't really say much without a picture my friend - 'a protrusion...'?

While I can't post pictures yet, the aplanatic condenser's threading that connects the lens unit to the body has an outer indentation that is bigger than my Microscope's mounting ring. This causes the condenser to be underutilized with a gap bigger than 1cm from slide to top lens. I think that either grinding down the condenser mount to so that the indentation can fit is one solution. However it seems that the condenser is a tad to small to fully touch or have adequate contact with the slide. Another solution is creating a little extender between the top lens threading and condenser body to raise the lens.

A 3rd way is to raise the entire condenser higher, using an adapter. You may have to DIY such an adapter. Whatever way you choose, make sure that the condenser is perfectly flat and centered to start with.

zzffnn,
How would a condenser adapter work?
Does increasing the cylinder length that holds the lens influence its N.A

You are complicating things unnecessarily.
If you are going to substitute Lomo parts get a Lomo Stand.
There is absolutely no virtue nor any sense in attempting to force fit Lomo parts in an Omax Stand.

Figure #2 of this page shows you how my Nikon condenser adapter works: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... t&start=15

I doubt it would help you though, as it is for Nikon dovetail.

You need to raise up all lenses of the condenser the same height and keep their original relative heights, not just the top lens. You may increase the empty cylinder casing length, without affecting the optics or NA. I am not sure how you do that though, without you showing us photos. And such a change may move iris away from its optimal position, which is not a good thing.

zzffnn, my preposition is to make a threaded ring that raises the top lens to a much more reachable height. It'll fit between where you would normally put the top lens and acts as a height increaser.

I don't think just raising the top lens is a good solution as you then change the distance between lenses and thus change the optical formula. You need to raise the whole condenser, maybe by replacing the condenser mounting ring with a larger one that will fit the condenser or as suggested get a Lomo frame.

I looked at a Lomo frame recently with the idea that I could you it as a base for a system but since most of my "spare" bits are Olympus I decided it would be too much work and not worth it, but since you are looking at using Lomo parts it might be the best option for you.
