I think this is an excellent reference for people interested in microscopy (Optical Microscopy by M.W.Davidson and M. Abramowitz.

I agree with gekko that the paper he mentions is an excellent resource. I do believe you will need to be prepared to do supplemental reading, if you are like me, as this in not a simple read.
