Culturing one's own Copepods
Re: Culturing one's own Copepods
Thanks for this!... Looks like something simple enough for me...
Re: Culturing one's own Copepods
One of the grandest is the adult female cyclops with egg sacks. One of my goals is to get a great pic of one.

Re: Culturing one's own Copepods
I would certainly like to see that if you are fortunate enough to catch one in that condition.....

Fist thing in the movie. And a baby being attacked almost by a Water Flea is at "scene two."
At about 6:26 is scene three a short view back at a Mommy Cyclops.

Re: Culturing one's own Copepods
BillBilt, the black things are egg sacks.
That article above says to scoop fast because Copepods are fast.
I just went to the Lake today, so I'll see if I get some more.

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Re: Culturing one's own Copepods
Thank you jwsmith! A sort of walk down memory lane to visit the link you share. Very practicle reasons this source and 'cook book' was compiled for. When West Nile virus first 'hit NY/Nj' we had die off of all sorts of crows, and jays...and we had mosquito control projects. In NJ there was an effort to place/ to stock 'little guppies' (Gambusia species) in all sorts ob water bodies...to control mosquitoes. It's odd to me that this 'Copepod strategy' did not surface in NY/NJ for mosquito control.
And now that West Nile virus is 'endemic' to all con-US...I still think of your link. The near permanent puddles in vast stretches of NYC subway tunnels...are there copepods there as well?
Of course my doggies and I hike about for microscopy water sample collection...so it was good to read our 'fast scoop method' is there in papers.
Very low cost online one can purchase: "Culture Methods for Invertebrate Animals", Lutz, Welch,Galtsoff, and Needham, 1937. I really enjoy your link, thank you jwsmith. charlie guevara
