Adult intermediate level book recomendations wanted

#1 Post by Dale » Sat Dec 13, 2014 2:59 am

I'm looking for a non-specific microscopy handbook guide manual. I've never made slides, used
oil immersion lenses, or stained. I can use a microtome and count blood cells, so my experience
is spotty and learned from the 50's. (I'm 73) I would call myself a revived recreational microscopist
of just about everything around.

One suggestion might be Handbook of Microtechnique by Gray:
http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Basic-Mi ... 8439666118
But hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I would give a better recommendation.

Hi Dale,
A truly encyclopedic if dated book is "The Microtomist's Formulary and Guide" by Peter Gray.
Good luck.
Peter.

Hello Dale

Try - "EXPLORING WITH THE MICROSCOPE" - by WERNER NACHTIGALL ,It is a well written , hands on book for the new comer or as a refresher course.
Published by Sterling Publishing Co.Inc. New York
ISBN 0-8069-0866-1

"THE MICROSCOPE AND HOW TO USE IT" - by Dr GEORG STEHLI
DOVER PUBLICATIONS,INC NEW YORK

And look at the Microscopy - UK website http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk

I'm two years behind you, and these books and the Micscape website were a great help to me when I took up microscopy in the 90,s

Best wishes

Read Exploring with the Microscope and Handbook of Microtechnique. Both excellent sources although dated. I can also recommend Guide to Microlife.

Hello again.

I've just thought of another modern book - SAFE MICROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES FOR AMATEURS -by Walter Dioni.
It deals with safe and simple techniques used in microscopy(as the title suggests) using everyday "chemicals".
Another book would be"PRACTICAL MICROSCOPY" by Eric Marston you may get this from Amazon or Brunel Microscopes in the UK.
Yes the old books are OK(I have a number myself) but you probably wouldn't find,or be allowed to posses the chemicals suggested for use

If you don't want to buy the book go onto http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk where you will find many articles by Walter
The book can be purchased from Amazon

I have no affiliation with any of these organisations
