Object Size Calculator

#1 Post by rnabholz » Fri May 20, 2016 2:58 pm

I just received my stage micrometer scale slide, and spent some time last evening playing around with it.

I took field measurements for all objectives both through the visual eyepieces, and the photo eyepiece.

With the photo eyepiece measurements known, calculating the object size from measurements taken from photos with a ruler on the monitor of the apparent field and the object of interest is a simple proportion calculation

Even though it is simple, it took more time than it should, and could be a bit confusing at times, I needed a tool.

So the Microscope Object Size Calculator was born.

You begin by setting it up for your scope. Enter a description of the scope for reference.

Then in the gray area under Results, enter the objective sizes on your scope, and next to that, the directly measured (or known) field size in microns for each objective.

Now save the file, and you are ready to use it.

In the yellow boxes you enter the measurements relating to the object you are interested in. First is the apparent field width. Use a ruler to measure the field as it appears on your monitor. Enter that number. Next is to measure the object of interest, and enter that number next to "Object Measurement"

The unit of measurement is not important, just that both measurements are taken in the same unit, so both metric, both imperial, etc

Once both are entered, the size of the object can be found in the Results section across from the objective size used to capture the image.

The file is an Excel file, and should run on lots of different platforms using excel clones. If you are interested you can download it here:

Thanks for that Rob.
I have a stage micrometer scale slide coming and was thinking of something similar using Excel.
Think I'll use yours.

Hey Rod, that's an elegant tool, nicely done and really useful. I'm going to give it a try asap as it'll be useful for use in the background alongside perhaps image-capturing software. Thanks for taking the time to make this available to us.
