I am probably the last one to know about this, so forgive me if it is widely known, but I just discovered the "It Came From the Pond" blog. http://www.itcamefromthepond.com
It is Bruce Taylor's effort, that kind fellow who drops in to save those of us who are ID challenged to provide the correct identification and take the time to provide the education to make it unnecessary in the future (apparently a patient man). While I have just begun to read the offerings there, I find it to be excellent. Interesting stories, relatable, information served in bite size bits and terms.
I was struck by a passage from the latest entry, as it relates to a discussion about sample gathering technique we just had in the Doing Diatoms thread. He describes the multiple dynamics at play in his local pond that effect what might be found in a sample taken at any given moment, from a few hours of bright sunlight, to a passing turtle that stirs up the bottom. Fun to ponder and great insight!
Well worth the time. Check it out!
