I can't recall if I have posted about these books before, but in case I haven't will do so now, and if so, then they're worth a repeat, I think.

The Freshwater Microscopist, and The Freshwater Microscopist Part 2, by Tony Pattinson of Reading, England, are two books I can't help believing many on this forum would enjoy, and benefit from having on their shelves. These aren't field guides for ID'ing critters, but rather, how-to guides on collecting, preparing, and studying them. Just a few of the topics covered are handling the catch, nets, containers, mountants, imaging, even a chapter on clearing and mounting diatoms (in Part 2). Both volumes were written in recent years, very up-to-date. Tony lives in England, of course, but his methods, materials, and techniques are almost entirely transferable to other continents.

Disclaimer: While Tony and I have corresponded via email for some time, and I have made a very small contribution or two to his books, I get no remuneration from sales. I promote them simply because I believe microscopy hobbyists will enjoy and benefit from them.

I don't get any kick-back from Tony either, but I have pestered him a little. After all, a recommendation from me is certainly worthy of some note... he did send me a note.

Seriously, I will second Kurt's post as I also have the books and believe they are well worth the time and investment. I can also say I have books from England.

Hi...what is the cost of these two books? I ask as there are gems on eBay and Amazon for less \than $30 USD. Microscopy and illustrated texts of collecting, specimen enjoyment, are a classic discipline which does not go out of date.

What is the specific cost of each of these texts? I'm curious to see the cost of these microscopy texts. thanks for you kind announcement here. Charlie guevara

Tony Pattinson has recently released the 4th volume of his Freshwater Microscopist series, an informal common sense guide to collecting, handling, and studying the wee life forms found in ponds, rivers, and lakes. Ever wish you had a knowledgeable, experienced mentor for your microscopy hobby? Well, this set of books may be the next best thing.

Thanks for the update on Part 4 of the series Kurt. I have the other three, but wasn't aware that Tony had released a fourth. As you stated, the books are a terrific source of thoroughly practical ideas and procedures, with attractive and informative illustrations. Tony is a bit of a Vickers M41 fan, having two of them, and on the few occassions when I've corresponded with him regarding my own M41 he has always been very helpful - very much a good guy whose efforts shoudl be supported.
