Hi Glen,
this looks as if the diatom would split in half next to duplicate (left and right) - do I understand this right?
Typical diatoms would split into top and bottom as seen in the microscope.

Yes, each half of the frustule, epitheca and hypotheca becomes a separate diatom.

The one formed by the epitheca remains the same size, while the one formed by the hypotheca is smaller.

have just reread your question and wonder if the way the drawings are arranged (vertically rather than horizontally) is confusing the matter.

Now I understand - the drawings show a side view of the diatoms. I hadn't seen the emerging new frustules.

Agree that a little more separation of the theca join in the drawings would have been helpful
