Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
I am on the lookout for an American Optical phase condenser to fit a Series 10, part number 1240 I believe. Also, a Ph x40 objective.
AO kit is very scarce here in the UK!
I have some Zeiss (West) kit in exchange if that suits, including Luminar holders and spectacle condensers.
kind regards
Mike

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
Ebay US does have a few 40x phase objectives listed but no current listings for the 1240 condenser. And I found only one listing for the past year (and that one was missing parts). I have read here that they are relatively easy to come by but I guess that's changed.

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
1240 condensers show up from time to time. A search of sold condensers, doesn't really show the frequency because they are more often than not listed with a heading that does not indicate the cat.#. Often for instance , just as an AO condenser, or AO phase condenser.
A diy workaround which is easily doable but obviously not the best solution, is to use the later condenser, cat.# 1205, with the newer dovetail removed( 3 screws) and replaced with the dovetail section from an abbe condenser, originally fitted to any of the microscope series 15.35,2,4 or 10. Those can go for as little as 15.00. It would require drilling 3 holes in the dovetail mounting plate, which is threaded to receive screws from above, rather than fastened with through screws, as is the case with the later dovetail. Other aspects of the later cat.# 1205 condenser are basically the same as the #1240 with one qualification.
The series 10 has a modified Kohler system which does not provide the correct image plane required for accurate phase but is good for BF. The series 20 does have the required kohler system. In order to compensate for this , the # 1240 condenser has an extra lens below the iris diaphragm. When used on a series 20, this lens is removed. If anyone ends up needing this lens, which is fitted in with a retaining ring; I know where there is one. I sent one out with a series 20 about 2 years ago, which was subsequently removed. I think the owner still has it. It does not fit directly into the 1205 condenser but it would not be too hard to fit it, if necessary.
The 1205 , also has a .90 achromat lens pack. The 1240, fitted with the 1242 standard distance lens pack , I presume to be aspheric but not achromatic. Due to the difference in the period of production, I would think that the later condenser lens pack is probably a nudge superior....newer coatings, a more refined achromatic( aplanatic too?) design. This isn't to say that aspherics are poor. They are so much better than an abbe condenser as to make your head spin. The 2 lens aspheric wide angle condenser they fitted to the series 400 ( cat.# 1970) is a marvel. 2 lenses!

Mike,
I have an AO 1240 phase condenser and 40X phase plan objective. PM me and we can work out the details.

I am indeed also looking for one! Having two Mikes in the thread has made things interesting. I keep seeing my name pop-up!apochronaut wrote:didn't see your original post, Pete but if you have one, you might offer it to MichaelBrock. I think he may be looking.PeteM wrote:Mike, . . .

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
Charles, I have tried to PM you, twice, but they just stay in my Outbox. I have sent to someone else successfully...
I wonder if you could PM me, so I can reply. Or...perhaps someone can explain what I am doing wrong.
thanks, Mike.

I think you may need more posts under your belt before you can PM other members.Or...perhaps someone can explain what I am doing wrong.
Best solution for now would be for Charles to PM you his email

Thanks for the tip. Strange that one message seemed to get sent though.

Do note that posts stay in Outbox until seen by recipient, only then are they visible in the Sent box.Strange that one message seemed to get sent though.

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
Charles has been known to step away from his computer for a day or two at a time.
Plus, this forum software evidently does not support email alerts to notify members when they have a PM. Matter of fact, I just looked and see I have a PM myself that I had no idea of (thanks for causing me to look). Yes, I understand there should be an option in Settings and I'm sure I've tried multiple times to get it working...

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
Still have messages (3 now) in my 'OUTBOX' and no sign of Charles.
Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
I have had good luck with being notified of a PM... Go to "Board preferences", " Edit notification options", "Miscellaneous Notifications",KurtM wrote:Charles has been known to step away from his computer for a day or two at a time.

"Someone sends you a private message", and check both boxes.. Works for me..

Re: Wanted: AO Series 10 Phase
Hi Kurt - yes, there's definitely a way to receive e-mail notification of a reply to any thread that you have originated or contributed too; similarly with pms - I receive a notification every time + a link to the latest activity that triggered the notification. Can't remember where I set it as an option, but most likely in the 'user control panel' section...KurtM wrote:Charles has been known to step away from his computer for a day or two at a time.

Hi Mike,
I've been away and didn't get any email notifications of any messages. In the past I got email notifications when I received a PM.
But, I have sent you a PM.

Yep, been there done that, still doesn't work for me, no email notifications from this site. Other forums, no problem.
