WANTED: AO Series 20

#1 Post by mnmyco » Tue Oct 09, 2018 8:56 pm

Hi,

I am on the look out for a cheap AO Series 20. I am not concerned about objectives or condenser (although an abbe condenser would be nice). So far I missed one on ebay by just a few dollars (really sucked) and have yet to see any others at a reasonable price.

So, you want just the stand? No objectives?
There were a lot of possibilities with a 20. 3,4 or 5 position nosepiece. abbe 1.25 condenser, abbe aspheric 1.25 condenser, achromat aplanat 1.3 condenser, cardioid DF condenser, single unit phase condenser, carousel phase condenser. fixed or centering condenser carrier, monocular, binocular or trinocular head, left or right hand stage, left or right hand slide carrier.
Huygens 10X, W.F. 10X, W.F. 15X, W.F. 20X eyepieces.

Depending on the level of the accessories wanted, the price would vary. Perhaps you could hone in on what exactly you want and the price you think acceptable. I have one for sure.

I will have to take a bit and go through things more thoroughly. I actually did not anticipate much interest/action on the post for a while. I am seriously interested in an AO series 20. I will edit this for more details before the end of the day (9pm my time).

Edit 1)

So, price wise, it mostly depends on what I can afford, which is not much since in the area I live I had to take a job I am way over qualified for since nothing else was available.

I would prefer a trinocular head since I want to do some photography, but I would take a binocular. I want at least a 4 objective nosepiece but I would prefer a 5. Righthand slide carrier on stage. Condenser-I don't care too much. I think I have a 1240 phase contrast condenser with 1242 lens available. If a condenser is with it a 1.25 simple abbe is fine.

Basically, I am not looking for being able to identify all the piece I would want, more I am looking for one that some one no longer needs or wants and if the price is something I can afford I will buy it.

if you have the 1240 condenser with the 1242 condenser lens pack then you do not need another condenser. Those are centering condensers, so the standard fixed condenser mount is adequate. It will work for phase and BF. Are your phase annuli intact and in good condition? I presume that you would want a phase system as well as BF and DF., so you will need 8 objectives and a DF condenser. For critical work, phase objectives don't really cut it for BF and are useless for DF.
A good 20 rarely goes really cheap. Sometimes there is one that needs cleaning or work and isn't too expensive. That's the best way to go, if you are capable. Bear in mind though, that once you start putting objectives into it, maybe a transformer, a DF condenser, trino head, lamp socket; all those parts can be pricey when in good shape. It is usually cheaper to buy a fine used instrument with no problems. Unfortunately you just missed an excellent one being sold by a member here. I just checked and it has sold.

Two things to watch out for with a 20. They are often missing the lamp socket. hard to find and even harder to D.I.Y. the 12 v. trafo meeds to be around 11 amps at least. 10 won't do. The original one is hard to find too. Both can be a surprising added cost , if they are not included.
