Olympus SPLAN 10X/0.30 160/0.17 objective for sale

#1 Post by Hobbyst46 » Mon Dec 24, 2018 12:05 pm

Selling my Olympus SPLAN 10X/0.30 160/0.17 objective. It is in excellent condition, very clear optics that I double-checked with a stereoscope. One tiny scratch on barrel tip (see photo). Yields a superb, bright and flat field of view.
I am selling it because I prefer to stick with Zeiss objectives on my Zeiss microscope, and recently bought a 10X/0.30 Zeiss Neofluar.
Very reasonable price, via PayPal, plus shipping fee of 25-35USD (via EMS, depending on destination).
This objective deserves a new home, on an Olympus BH-2 possibly.
PM me if interested.

I have much less experience with Olympus, than some other brands. What is the S for? With some brands SPlan means semi-plan, or around 80-90% of the field , plan. Vickers , uses the term Microplan for the same thing.

I once thought that it was semi-plan indeed... but no, they mean super-plan.

Citing the alanwood table of Olympus objective designations:
SPlan 160 mm- Achromat, superwide flat field up to F.N. 26.5, strain-free for polarising applications and Nomarski DIC

Citing a Greg Mchone article from 2013, about Olympus BH-2 microscopes:
"... However, my colleagues and I find that "normal" biological A, DPlan and SPlan Olympus objectives show little to no obvious strain effects, so go ahead and use them with polarizing filters (the SPlans also have higher resolution and wider plan focus than the DPlan PO versions)."

"The DPlan objectives work great with standard wide-view 10x eyepieces such as the WHK and WK models, which have an excellent field number of 20. But if you are lucky enough to have one of the rather rare super-wide heads with their 30 mm diameter FN 26.5 SWHK eyepieces, the SPlan objective line is designed to provide flat focus across that extreme view field. You also might wish to use them with the swing-up SC condenser."

So they are superwide - plan achromats. I myself had the pleasure of testing it only at FN20 though... and not with any special polarizing filters nor DIC.
Of the Dplans, I used a fluorescence 40X1.0 Dplan (oil), a fantastic objective, again up to FN20 ony.
