#1 Post by mrsonchus » Fri Jan 18, 2019 3:24 pm

NOW SOLD NOW SOLD

Hi all, I'm selling a Schott fiber-optic light source.
It's a 150W Halogen model 'KL 1500 elctronic' with a three-way light pipe included.
It works perfectly, here are a few images, please look at my listing for more details...
My listing is here -->https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254080127007?ul_noapp=true

It is in good clean condition and working perfectly - I have 2 others that I use in my small lab and am making a little room with the sale of this one. Very good for use with a stereo 'scope and photography of course.

I have it listed for £150 on e-bay plus postage but will be happy to sell it to a member here for £110 plus postage.

Thanks, John B.

just pm me if you are interested or would like more info - more images on e-bay too.

Hi einman, not quite sure as the postage to the U.S. would need to be added - I'd need to get a quote for an address my friend.

Are you looking for one old chap? This triple is a rarity I suspect.

regards, John B.

The thin points are a really nice feature. I'll have to keep my eyes out for one of those pipes.

Yes they're good for oblique, the treble-arm is one I haven't seen before. I have it for sale on e-bay if you're interested.....

I am almost sure that the tips can be directly dipped inside a water tank, e.g. an aquarium, for underwater illumination.

They probably can as I believe the manufacturing process involves heat and fusion of the ends of the glass fibers before optical polishing. I'd probably use an envelope though just to be on the safe side until I'd contacted Schott to ask them.....

Good Deal. I thought it was the best deal on E-bay.

Thanks einman, it went quite suddenly and now I've just a little more space in the lab. I still have my own 2-pipe version of the same model, with the condensers for the pipe-ends and a blue-filter. I find it really very versatile. It's also handy just to be able to 'grab a pipe' as it were and use the beam for a table-top job.

I still have a 'Volpi Intralux 4000' 90W fiber-optic with the long flexible pipe that has a y-junction for two gooseneck pipes. The junction has a clamp to enable it to be fixed just about anywhere whilst the power unit is similarly situated, less need to have the whole thing right-up with the 'scope. I'm going to put this one up for sale in the next few days also.

Ha! What do you think of the ingenious 'mechanical' light-intensity control and it's spiral-aperture!

It's a nice unit but I keep cluttering up the lab!

After speaking up too soon, I thought something looked unfamiliar. So I dug it out of storage and the model I have is a 4000-1. It is 120W model. Nevertheless it does use that ridiculous (edit: not ridiculous-ingenious) mechanical method of varying light intensity. Given what these units cost new, you would have thought it would have had a much more sophisticated technology. But it is rather compact as result. Perhaps that was the intent. It is a good light source. I have no plans of selling mine.

I picked up a Nikon SMZ800, by surprise, complete with another Fiberoptic illuminator so I will see how that one performs.

The iris is praised in gemological circles for not varying the light temperature while dimming, so there's at least some justification for it.

I agree - it works perfectly - I was really impressed with the ingenuity of it's design, and it's simplicity. :D

Not varying light intensity via such a simple method is quite ingenious! I never thought of that. Now I have a whole new respect for the design. Simplicity is always better in the end! Leica's approach utilizes circuitry and adds significant expense.

I stand humbled and corrected.
