WTB: Leitz mechanical stage for polarizing stage #40, #42 Part Number 553082
Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone had one of these for sale or would know where to find one.
I see that there is one for sale on ebay from china for $400+shipping and import duties seems a little steep to me.
Also if anyone is aware of cheaper alternatives I'm all ears!
Figured I'd ask, thanks!
Edit:
This is the attachable XY stage I am looking for

That seems to be the general asking price on ebay. Seems rather high to me as well.

Thanks for the info Jimur!
Sucks that they are so pricey.
I was thinking about getting this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polarized-Movi ... SwR5FdIteW and then just drilling and tapping my own mounting holes in it.
I would definitely prefer the leitz one but i'm not sure if the shiny german aluminum is worth the extra $350

What do you have in the way of a mount block that connects to the z-focus motion of the microscope?
Because this looks nice: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Circular-Rotat ... SwIgNXs4H4 But it needs the mount.

microb,
I have a Leitz SM-LUX-POL, my stage has two bolts in the rear but I would have to pull it off to get a decent picture or to measure and see if it would fit with that one.
I'll have to check!
Edit:
The mounting holes on mine are about 48mm center to center

Re: WTB: Leitz mechanical stage for polarizing stage #40, #42 Part Number 553082
One factor you should keep in mind when looking for a circular stage that will be used for Polarization, is the stage center-able, or is the microscope nose piece center-able? Especially if the intended use is as a true PLM. Ideally the nose piece will be center-able because it does not require the re-centering of the stage when the objectives are changed. Even the highest quality microscope will have some differences in parcentration that would be disruptive to work with individual mineral crystals.
By the way, a good precision rotating stage that is reproducible and free in motion is not trivial. That is why they tend to be expensive. You generally get what you pay for when it comes to precision machining.

Wayne

wabutter,
my SM-LUX-POL does already have a circular stage so I would prefer to keep it and get the leitz attachable stage but if I were able to get a whole stage with mechanical XY from a different microscope for considerably less I would consider it.
You are absolutely right about making sure it's centerable, I think the amount of time and effort that would go into swapping one might just not be worth it.
$400 is steep for the attachable stage I want but at the end of the day it's probably my best bet.
I have attached an image of the XY stage I am looking for and will edit the image into my 1st post as well.

Re: WTB: Leitz mechanical stage for polarizing stage #40, #42 Part Number 553082
Thanks for posting the image, jb89 ... I don't recall ever seeing the Leitz item in 'the flesh' so it's good to have a decent picture.
At the risk of stating the obvious: There are good reasons why these will be costly
1. The arrangement is neccessarily very compact, and [to be useful] will need to be well engineered
2. They are awkward to manipulate, and therefore they are basically confined to the rotating stage
... well made, in small quantities, for a niche market, by Leitz
Regarding possible alternatives: I was recently fortunate to buy an incomplete [it's missing the slide-holding clip] and rather scruffy mechanical stage for the Vickers/CTS Polarizing Microscope ... This uses 'thumbwheel' adusters, and it is lower-profile than the Leitz, 'though not nearly so sophisticated.
We're very busy for the next few days, but I will take some photos when I can ...

Edit: in principle, rather than detail; this one is similar to the CTS design:

... and is probably the same product as the ebay offering that you linked earlier.

Don't suppose a Märzhäuser Wetzlar AK3 Slide Holder would suit?

75rr,
It might, what do the mounting points look like?
How much do those normally run?
I attached pictures of the mounting holes I have.
They are all threaded but the pins on the leitz holder I was looking at had one threaded and two unthreaded
The measurements are approximate, I only have a protractor to measure at the moment.
Edit:
I saw your other post, it looks like it would not fit on my stage without modification

Agree, the Märzhäuser Wetzlar AK3 Slide Holder will not fit.
I do have an old Leitz slide holder with two types of holder that looks like it will.
3mm pins, 45mm between them with the screw offset midway between.
Pages 22 and 37: http://www.earth2geologists.net/Microsc ... _optim.pdf
Will PM with my email if you are interested.

Hey 75RR,
I think that would probably fit
I would prefer the 553082 (nicer looking and had beveled interior edges to avoid bumping objectives) but I am interested depending on asking price, feel free to PM if you would prefer to talk there.
Thanks!

Just as an aside: I see that there was also a 'point counting' vesrion of the stage available, with interchangeable pinion heads ... see printed page 39 [PDF page 41] of this document, et seq.
