UHL Rod Microscope

#1 Post by 75RR » Tue Sep 24, 2019 5:33 pm

I am going to be polite and call these people auction resellers.

Anyway, they have had this UHL Rod microscope for sale at this silly price for ages.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MODERN-UHL-W ... XQhpdRpZAA

Anyone happen to know what they are really worth?

Have one to sell. Can't find a price anywhere.

Why not email them and ask what their manufacturer’s suggested retail price is....at least you’ll be in the ballpark value-wise.

Thanks Mike-Roscope, but wanted to avoid that. Do not imagine they will be very pleased with that query.

This is a pretty standard setup even if the bramd itself is kind of uncommon. A couple Russian ones and an older one from Southern Precision (maybe Chinese or Japanese) have sold for about 50 bucks on eBay. This is a German brand but not exactly a well known one so I wouldn't expect a huge premium from that (unless they happen to be huge in this one subarea?). I would think most semi experienced microscopists could assemble one of these themselves or modify a similar item like an old fiber optic microscope, though this one has a strong spiffiness factor.
So I dunno, my only-vaguely-informed opinion would be maybe around 100bux, but you could always put it uo higher obo on eBay and hope for the right customer.

Edit: oh, here is a similar unit by Rathenow, a nicely comparable german-but-obscure brand, that went for 110 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2686579045

Let’s boost the price a little for you ...

This is not dissimilar:

Supplied under several brand-names, I believe
... One of mine is a Gallenkamp, if I recall correctly.

The SPI/Graticules unit likely doesn't command that type of price used though:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 3181800130
These are likely older iterations, but the technology is likely unchanged.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear ... I had no intention of suggesting that it would.

Yeah, to be honest I just wanted an excuse to show off my comps.

From my limited experience, the linked Ebay dealer is happy to ship the worst and typically over-priced crap imaginable. In this case it looks like a decent scope, just way over-priced.

As for your scope and as suggested above, a monocular single objective scope of that type, but from Gaertner, B&L, etc. -- typically with a similar short barrel or more modern DIN objective -- seems to go for around $50+. FWIW, I have what looks to be the twin of that 7x objective and it's OK, but nothing special. The scope does look elegantly designed, maybe a bit more? Reticle presence and type might make a difference - maybe $100-$195 or so?

Here's the cheap competition: https://www.amazon.com/Carson-MicroBrit ... 845&sr=8-2

Here's a more comparable Reichert example, with a prism-tilt head and two objectives, mounted to a focusable stand. It hasn't sold locally at $165:

Hi Glen,
your microscope is similar to the Peak workshop microscopes: https://www.otelo-werkzeug.de/produkte/ ... 1-skg.html
https://www.ebay.de/itm/Peak-Staender-M ... .l4275.c10
Usually they have a scale to do quick mesurements. There is also a russian model that gives a very nice image but is built quite long and is unwieldy for this reason. On german ebay microscopes of this type fetch 50€, but since a modest supply meets a modest demand the prices vary a lot, maybe 15-100€.
For a microscopist it might be useful as a portable sample-tester for field use: Keep or discard?

There were lots of smaller optics companies in Wetzlar, Asslar was one of them, probably good but not remarkable quality.

Thanks for the additional info.

Have taken some photos of it, will see if I place an ad in ebay over the next few days.

Thanks again to all.
