Wild Man Microscopist
Wild Man Microscopist
In a recent conversation, an unnamed member of this forum, lets call him Curt, in reference to my microscopy, referred to me as a "wild man".
It made me wonder just what sort of behavior a " Wild Man Microscopist " might exhibit. I came up with a couple, please share yours.
1. He turns his lamp intensity up all the way to 11.
2. He stubbornly refuses to use the Latin plural form of a protist's name.
3. He on occasion has been known to reuse a slide after only a cursory cleaning.

Re: Wild Man Microcopist
My humorless comments:
1. Regarding the lamp voltage, a slight reduction of lamp voltage increases its life by a disproportionate amount (see, for example, http://www.lumitroncorp.com/basics.html#anchor160376 ), so it would pay to use the 9 or 10 setting instead of 11. Otherwise I would make sure I have at least two spare bulbs on hand .
2. I tend to agree with you regarding plurals of Latin names, but I usually check with the Merriam Webster on-line dictionary to make sure, for example I use amoebas but parmecia.
3. Judging from your exceptional dark field images, I find that hard to believe!
Re: Wild Man Microscopist
1. Buys eBay microscope when he already owns two that are more or less just like it. (No implications on Charles, cough.)
2. Prides self on aquariums that measure 6" on the longest side.
3. Makes fun of colleagues in his own field.

Keeps pond water samples in emptied dill pickle jars, SPICY variety.
When collecting pond specimens, rolls pants up OVER the knee.

Eats baby food (under the appalled gaze of his wife) in order to use the empty jars for the pond water samples.rnabholz wrote:Keeps pond water samples in emptied dill pickle jars, SPICY variety.

Gives his wife a nice microscope for Christmas so he can use it himself.
Then talks her into buying a nice lab table for his Christmas to put it on.
