Came across 3 Lomo MBD-1 Field Microscopes up for auction.
Thought perhaps some members might be interested in these small and rather neat looking field microscopes that come with their own briefcases.

There is also a very nice Lomo Biolam D11 which would make a youngster a good starter microscope.

Re: Lomo MBD-1 Field Microscope
My LOMO scope looks like that D11. It weights about 9 lbs with bino head (or 7 lbs with mono head) and without that heavy solid metal case, if I remember correctly.
I don't like its fine focus drive's limited travel range, so I only use it as a portable. Its removable objective turret is nice, but fiddly to align perfectly with its optical train.
Its condenser mount has a common diameter of (if I remember correctly) 37mm and its stage table has pre-drilled holes that can take some common Chinese XY slide holders without modifications. Those features make DIY easy.
I see that those MBD-1 models have fine focus knobs, instead of fine focus wheels at bottom. I wonder if those (older style?) fine focus drives would work better?

Too many 'projects'
Re: Lomo MBD-1 Field Microscope
These MBD-1 come with an additional 40:1 0,75 water immersion objective.
One drawback of these instruments is that you are supposed to remove all objectives before storing the intrument in the box. For long travels in extreme regions this might just be fine, but for use as a quick-to-grab garden microscope this is a drawback.
They are based on the old Zeiss Jena LG stand, a ground breaking model at it's time and still very good today.
