Some of you may also be interested in the practical use of the test plate. Found some info on some of the forms:

Gyrosigma balticum EHRENBERG:
This species has a relatively coarse structure: about 11-16 transverse and longitudinal stripes account for 10µm. A lens with an aperture of 0.45 is intended to resolve this structure.

Stauroneis phoenicenteron
The shell has 10-20 transapical stripes by 10µm that are clearly punctured. With a lens n.A. 0.65 this structure must be clearly recognized.

Nitzschia sigma W.SMITH
The transverse ribs crossed by irregularly few longitudinal ribs are to be recognized with an aperture of 0.75. Often, however, this will only succeed with an oil immersion.

Surirella gemma EHRENBERG
The structure of this species can only be recognized correctly with good immersion objectives n.A. 1.0 to 1.3 correctly: a delicate areola mesh that consists of elongated hexagons in the longitudinal direction of the shell. The transverse ribs between the large fields, about 20 by 10µm, must already be recognizable with a dry objective n.A. of 0.85. The much more delicate longitudinal ribs, about 24 to 10 m, can only be recognized with the oil immersion.

Pleurosigma angulatum W.SMITH
This classic test object shows 18 to 22 areoles on 10μm. The resolution of the structure must be done with a lens n.A. 0.85 so that with central illumination all three stripe systems are simultaneously visible. The tiny areoles must appear either evenly hexagonal or circular depending on the setting. As a result of the bowl curvature, this can only be demonstrated on a part of the cell wall. It is also suitable for studying the effect of oblique illumination. The eccentrically adjusted iris diaphragm is guided around the optical axis. However, this is only possible with the large Abbe-lighting apparatus with de centering iris. In this process, the three stripe systems of the cell wall emerge successively.
Pleurosigma angulatum is often cited in the literature as a test object.

Thank you very much! I ordered this very test form just a few days ago and this will prove very useful.
