45-50 years ago I was taught in college biology that a living thing was any carbon chemistry-based structure capable of cellular-level respiration. What's wrong with that old definition? Of course, discovery of extraterrestial life might require a relaxation of some constraints of the aforesaid definition; but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.
