My New Leica DM750 - Unboxing and Setup
Being new to microscopy, I did a lot of research on choosing a microscope. As an engineer by trade, I am familiar with the evaluation process, even when the subject matter is unfamiliar. Thanks to various articles on this forum and others, I decided to pick a new microscope from one of the top 5 manufactures. My specific reason for Leica really doesn't matter.., because all the top manufactures offered excellent instruments for about the same price. There were just a few features I liked about this manufactures model over the others.
With my decision set, I called a local distributer in the NE USA ..., Microscope Central. This is a family run company that had a lot of excellent reviews, a wide variety of new and used microscopes and options, and very competitive pricing. I worked with Scott Miller who helped me with the configuration of the microscope, and provided advice on future options as i might need down the road. I went for a rather basic configuration, but did specify the Hi PLAN objectives (4x, 10x, 40x, 100x oil). I also included a dark field slider for the condenser. I placed the order, and the next day a FedEX truck delivered my new microscope. One of the advantages of going through a dealer like Microscope Central is they do most of the assembly for you. Unlike the detailed instructions in the manual, everything is assembled, configured, and aligned. All I had to do was assemble an upgraded optional viewing tube and eyepieces, remove a few safety locks , and I was finished. The objectives had already been installed and the condenser installed and aligned by Scott's team. The entire process would have taken me 15 minutes, but I stretched it out a while, savoring the experience as well as taking several pictures along the way.
I am more than satisfied with the quality of this new instrument, as well as the support I received from Microscope Central and questions answered early in my evaluation process by Leica technical support. I've included several pictures in my Flicker Album on the link below. Please let me know if I can answer any questions you might have. Thanks..

Beautiful looking microscope. I hope it serves you well. Definitely try oblique lighting inserts as well.

Runningtide, you'd mentioned the competitive pricing. Curious to know -- is the Web price listed what they charge - or is some further discount possible?
One of the Leica pluses is the excellent contrast of their objectives.

That's what I call a shiny new microscope! I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it.
Can't tell from your photographs but did you include the Koehler field diaphragm option?

Thanks for the wonderful comments. To answer a few questions;
PeteM...Im always hesitant to discus exact pricing details. but I suggest calling Scott and ask him. Please feel free to mention my first name (Michael). Im sure he will be able to put it together. Overall I think you'd be pleased buy the companies pricing and service.
75RR....Though I thought about adding the Koehler option, I was pushing my budgets as it was, and also wanted to have additional money for the "accessories / lab supplies" In addition I also purchased a high tech iPhone adapter from iDu Optics, which Ill review under a separate article. The adapter and photo quality are simply unbelievable.
daruosha...Thanks for the comments about the oblique lighting inserts.

Hi redflanker
I do plan in the future to upgrade the condenser and objectives for phase contrast. Just out of budget this first time around. BTW..I did post a Flicker link above the photo in my original post that has several pictures of the microscope. I am also going to post a review of my iPhone adapter from iDu Optics as seen below.
Example below of human blood smear (mine...unstained )

Hi dash;
A complete tour of the adapter capabilities is on www.iduoptics.com. I can't tell you how pleased I am with this alternative to the more standard and expensive forms of digital microscopy. This is a professionally made product, very popular in the medical community. Below are a few pictures, but do check out the web. I ordered mine and I had it in 24 hours. Also, it is a New York company.
