Olympus BHTU

#1 Post by houstontx » Sun Jul 12, 2015 2:27 am

Just purchased last week. Found it at a used equipment dealer near me. Was able to cherry pick the trinocular head and two objectives from different scopes. Came with phase contrast condenser, carrying case and spare bulb. I plan on hooking up a camera eventually. Two issues, the eyepieces are stuck and I can't adjust the eye distance (luckily the last user had the same distance as me) and the pull lever to switch to camera tube has rust on the end and is a bit difficult to pull. I am wondering if I could scrub off the rust and oil it. I am worried about rust falling inside as well as getting oil in the optics. Any thoughts?

When properly serviced the BH2 is a great scope. Both your problems are with dry lubricant. The best solution is to disassemble the body, clean out the dry grease and re-lubricate the slides. Don't try to force the eyepieces apart as there are a couple of delicate pins that are prone to shearing under pressure. Don't oil the slides.

That is a very nice microscope. Remember that it is a delicate instrument, do not force anything.
It may take time and patience to loosen some things, worth it in the end.
I would also suggest that you only service what actually needs to be done, attempting to dismantle and recondition the whole microscope will definitely lead to calibration problems (it is put together with equipment you do not have access to) and probably mechanical ones as well.
The adage "if it is not broken , do not fix it" is very apt in this case.

Ok thanks good to know. There is an olympus certified tech at an optics store two blocks up the road from me. I might take it in to him.

I am worried about the pull lever because it is so difficult that it would shake the camera & slide when switching back and forth to take pics.

It is a shame to see such a wonderful instrument as this was allowed to get rust on it...

I'll repeat what I said earlier, the lubricant is dry. It will not get any better. Take it to the service tech. It's worth it.

houstontx - howdy neighbor, I'm down in League City. I'd like to ask about where you got your scope, and who you're thinking about taking it to for service. I have a couple Oly's, latest acquisition a nice little BX45. Open forum probably not best for this kind of local discussion, my email addy is ngc704@ aol.com (remove space).

Cheers, Kurt

Hello houstontx and Kurt! I am in Houston (77030) area too. I am guessing houstontx' service place is Land Sea and Sky - I have been there many times. I would be interested to know the used scope dealers in Houston though. I know many eBay'er buy scopes from auctions for about $9 a piece (usually a lot of > 10) and resell them.

I can be reached at zzffnn at hotmail dot com (how do I PM members at this forum by the way?). I have a modified Nikon Labophot 2, an AO series 4, a LOMO Biolam, an AO Sixty and Swift stereo scope.

Thank you Bill. Maybe because my low post count, I still could not find/access PM (I tried to "compose PM" and was told that I cannot do it yet) . I will try to contact Oliver I guess.

Sorry for diverting your topic houstontx.

Edit: How funny, that PM button appear right after I posted my 3rd post.

Chris,

Shall all four of us have a meet at Kurt's place in League City? It is going to be lots of fun! You are I are probably 15 minutes of driving from each other.

Kurt does not want to drive to Houston. Bill, what do you think? You live outside the 610 loop too and not far from League City, right? Please feel free to PM or email me.

Have a great weekend,
Fan

Hi Fellows,
Thanks so much for the invitation to this, but I am disabled and going through a rough time right now... I am mostly house bound and can't hardly leave the house... Maybe sometime in the future I will improve enough to make a trip like that..

Warmest Regards,
BillT
