Bufo Bill's Seben SBX-V (5).

#1 Post by Bufo Bill » Sat Apr 09, 2016 6:06 pm

Here's a quick picture of my SPX 5 Binocular Microscope. I have had it set up for looking at pond life, mainly small crustaceans like Daphnia and Hydra that I collected either in my garden or on days out in the countryside.
I am setting it up to examine moss samples, you may just see my sample rack in the background (hmm, looking at the picture again, perhaps a separate picture of that will follow!)
It feels good to be getting back in the saddle as it were, although I only have a sample from the extension roof slated to start!
Let me know if you would like to see any specific parts in more detail.
All the best from Bill.

Thanks for looking everyone.

Yes, hydras do look like flowers don't they? I actually saw one grab a daphnia once, very grisly but exciting to witness. I have heard from aquarist friends that large ones may take fish fry as prey!

Many thanks for the kind comments on a very bad photograph!

I will be interested in your adventures and future posts. I have never seen a hydra so if you come across one please document how and where. Help me know where to look.

Jim: try looking in wildlife ponds in gardens, or even flooded ditches in late spring, if the water contains small free swimming life like daphnia, try looking on submerged vegetation or twigs below the waterline. If you find a really pristine pond you may find freshwater sponges in the same sort of locations, but they are delicate and a sample cannot be taken without killing the creature, these are very rare and should be left alone. Hydra sometimes live in gelatinous colonies, then they most definitely look like flowers when they extend their arms to catch food.
Hope this helps. All the best from Bill. :D
