My new microscope... almost

#1 Post by Crater Eddie » Sun Feb 01, 2015 6:12 pm

These are some of the photos from Ebay of my "new" microscope. It won't arrive here for another 2 or 3 weeks, but I thought I would go ahead and show it.
It is another Russian made LOMO microscope, a model not common in the USA. You will note that it has a built in Koehler illuminator, and coaxial focusing controls, features I have wanted for some time.

It also has a rotating stage, useful for polarizing work, and an oblique condenser.

All internet searches for this model come up with nothing. I have found a few online that seem to be built on the same frame, they are mostly set up for petrology work.

The power supply for the lamp is missing, but that is not a problem, I can come up with something.
Even if I never figure out it's pedigree, I'll have lots of fun putting to into operating condition. I think it will be interesting comparing it's optics to the LOMO optics that I already have. The seller says that the objectives are achromats so I don't expect miracles.

Looks wonderful. Does it have a rotating stage? I see it is fitted with the LOMO oblique condenser-- a great addition. I have one that, after I bought it I thought was of poor quality, but then I noticed that the lens surfaces were pretty dirty: once cleaned it is great! Unfortunately it doesn't fit my Nikon microscope so I rarely use it.

That is a monster scope! Looking forward to your build updates.
Rotating stage is a big plus for afocal photography.
Do you have a manual/parts list for it?

I don't have any manuals for this scope yet, I do have a few emails out to folks who might be able to come up with something.
It does look kind of big sitting in that chair, doesn't it? I hope it is as impressive in person.

Rotating stage is also great for polarized light and to select the "shadow angle" when using oblique illumination.

This scope has a lot in common with some that I see that were set up as polarizing scopes. The rotating stage is a big clue of course. Also, the assembly under the condenser is mentioned on the LOMO America site as containing a glass polarizing element, at least on the polarizing scope being detailed. My guess is that this is a combination filter holder and swing out lens assembly.
