A new thread for a question

#1 Post by lorez » Mon Feb 02, 2015 11:43 pm

In another discussion 75RR mentioned that a, "Rotating stage is a big plus for afocal photography."

Rather than hijack the thread I would ask for clarification here. What are the advantages ?

Thanks,

lorez

I wondered about that myself.

This should really be in Camera systems and imaging.

Depending on how the camera is attached one has a choice of portrait or landscape format.
Unfortunately the subject we are photographing is not always round.
Sometimes they are "longer than they are wider" .
When that happens Murphy's Law dictates that they cut across the screen.

I do not have a Rotating Stage but I am keeping an eye out for one.

When I was working on rectangular cells, I needed to have the cell under study (cells were randomly oriented on the "slide") "horizontal" relative to the video camera, so I mounted the camera between two "lazy Susans" so I could rotate the camera to get the same effect 75RR describes. In my case, using a rotating stage was not possible for operational reasons.

Maybe someone can move this topic.

I understand the rotating stage for orientation of the camera, but that is not something that is specific to an afocal connection. I use a C-mount camera so when the need calls for a different orientation I rotate the camera.

perhaps I should have added ... when not affixed to the microscope.

You will need to PM Oliver on this

Hi Lorez,
The rotating stage can also be used when viewing with DIC to align the object with best advantage to the sheer of the contrast.

Thanks Peter,

I have very little experience using DIC. I took one stacked photo and decided to go for the color even though it was wrong.

lorez, when do we expect to see a picture of your microscope? :)

gekko,

Thanks for your interest. Please be patient. I am a horrible organizer and my space is a giant jumble. I don't even have room to hang a curtain. I would like to find a couple of minutes to take a few photos, but should probably clear a spot to sit first. I will make an effort to get something done.

You are probably 'snowed under', or snowed in, or both!

A note about a rotating stage.
Typically, rotating stages are found only on polarizing microscopes.
To retrofit a standard compound microscope could prove to be quite expensive.
