Leitz Hardness Tester

#1 Post by Scarodactyl » Mon Jan 14, 2019 11:07 pm

I recently came across this baby at a surplus sale--I'm only vaguely familiar with hardness testers or how to use them, but I love how solidly built it is. Does anyone know where I can find a bit more information on it? I doubt I'll have much of a use for it but it was too cool to just leave there. At the same time it would feel kind of wrong to just repurpose the base as I was originally thinking of doing.

Very Nice !!

I don't have any literature on the Leitz version, but I can probably post something here about Vickers.

... It may be a few days though.

You may be able to figure out a lot of it. Main idea is to use a penetrator with a calibrated force into a bit of metal being tested for hardness. So, your tester will have a penetrator.

The size or depth of the penetration mark correlates with hardness. Harder it is, the less it penetrates. Your scope should have some sort of scale to measure the size of the penetration.

I don't see that it would be of much use for anything other than testing Rockwell hardness. ???

Anyone with an interest in micro-machining would [should] see its potential as a miniature jig-borer.

This one would opt for something more specialized for the purpose. :) I know very little about microscopes, but I do know machining.
