Zeiss Tessovar

#1 Post by wstenberg » Sun Sep 29, 2019 9:22 pm

Not many Tessovars nowadays...

Mounted on the Zeiss Stereomicroscope stand.

Dolan-Jenner Fiber light, plus LED light from China.

Mouse teeth on the monitor.

John Denver on the 8-track...

Very cool to see! I guess this means there are at least two in Texas - "Nessy the Tessy" is a marvelous monster that lives in my lab. I could use a better picture of it, however (as with the original Nessy, I suppose).

I've seen these guys recommended in the same breath as the Wild M400 series, but to be honest I am not entirely sure how they work. Did they have an option for eyepieces? Do they have zoom optics, or fixed mag? Parfocal or did magnification changes change the working distance? They certainly look like fine instruments.
I've searched for them on eBay before but never seen a complete set that I remember, just parts.

They are wonderful beasts ... Unfortunately mine is in storage at the moment, but here's a copy of the manual:

Thanks for the link. I went and read his informative writeup as well.
The max NA without aux lenses is listed at about .05, which is about half of the Wild makrozoom, but it sounds like color correction might be a bit better. They must produce a great image overall given their reputation, though I haven't seen many examples.
It doesn't look like Zeiss made a microscope head for it but I wonder if you could put it onto one anyway (maybe an M420 head, or a Nikon?). That's not as big a deal with easy liveview but would be my preference for using one.

It was designed to have a beam splitter tube with an eyepiece for focusing and metering. That's not really necessary when using an SLR or video camera because you can focus through the camera.

But, the binocular head for the Zeiss Standard fits perfectly on the upper dovetail and can be used for viewing, and the Zeiss trinocular can be used for viewing and imaging. When you do this, you are increasing the optical path a little, and you lose parfocality when zooming.

Kurt, good to see another Tessovar in Texas!

o.k. guys, but what would you say to another Tessovar some tiny steps out of Texas? ;)

By the way: only a "full frame"-Cam like i.e. the Canon 5D is able to show the whole area of the tessovar, because it was originally made to work with an old Zeiss-cam as there were the Contarex, Contaflex, Ikarex and so on.
Even if you work with a Zeiss bino or Trinocular, you see only a smaller part of what would be possible. So the best way would be to install a full-frame camera with a flexible monitor.
The screw clamp fastened on the knob of the tessovar is a sensitive stacking-instrument, that works sufficiently.

Here a link to my thread in the german forum with pictures of a "green stink bug" (palomena prasina) made with the tessovar to be seen above.

Nice set-up!
Good to see another Tessovar, even if it's not within the borders of Texas!

Thanks for the information, and the excellent pictures of the Green bug.

Nice z-axis handle!
