some other Zeiss toys

#1 Post by Seaborg » Fri Oct 25, 2019 2:02 pm

Here some further black "Standard" microscopes from Zeiss:

this is the smallest Zeiss-Standard-micro, the "Junior". It was one of the first new microscopes of Zeiss after the war

this is the "Standard GFL" with "optovar" and "Universal-Kondensor"

this is the largest "Zeiss-Standard", the WL research- microscop with the most interchangeable parts of all
I got it from a pathology-professor at a New York Medical College.
He dated the construction-year with 1967

Hi Reinhardt,
thank you for showing your beautiful instruments!
From this document here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... DdQSXicwEE
I read that the GFL came in 1949 and the Junior in 1952. I have no documents to verify Klaus Henkels text, but usually he is right in what he writes.
Your GFLs and Junior are already from the second generation: They are "Chromleisten" models with (I think) roller bearings for the table.

Both GFL and Junior are really nice microscopes. The earlier GFLs and to some extend the Juniors didn't have quite the market leading durable fine focus gear of the later ones and especially the grey and beige Standards.
The Junior is in fact the more modern design compared to the GFL: It had concentric interlinked coarse and fine focus moving the table. I like it a lot as a work microscope.

Hi Bob,

of course you are right!
The GFL (the "Standard") was a few years ahead.
Do you know the start time of the WL ?

Hello Reinhard,

Thank you for sharing your other vintage Zeiss toys with us. Saying they're nice doesn't even begin to cover it. But that WL... simply gorgeous!! What are the objectives on the WL, they seem like very high end lenses (I think a planapo 40/0.95, neofluar 63/0.9 and the rest I can't tell)

Best regards
Wes

There are most likely earlier records but this will at least be a start

Hello Wes,
you are right: the one in the foreground left is a Neofluar 63/0,90, left behind a Planapo 40/0,95, the objectiv with the white band is a Planapo 100/1,3 oil and there are also a Planapo 25/0,65 and a Neofluar 6,3/0,2.
Some of these had been delivered with the microscope.

Best regards
Reinhard

thank you for this interesting detail, 75RR,
the period of the black WL seems to start 1959. Even in the german forum could no one supply evidence for an earlier start.

Did this for another microscope on the forum viewtopic.php?f=24&t=8217#p72013 so it is only fair to do this with this one as well:

A simple Purchasing Power Calculator would say the relative value is $11,600.00. This answer is obtained by multiplying $1343 (see image below) by the percentage increase in the CPI from 1959 to 2018.

A serious money microscope still available in very good condition today, and still doing an excellent job.

This is the link to the calculator: https://measuringworth.com/index.php
