... increasingly, they are biodegradable, and prone to disintegration, making a terrible mess.

I use two cotton pillow cases, one over the other. Stops dust and avoids the possibility of condensation.

But doesn't that shed off cotton fibers?

Nothing that can't be removed with a blower.

When you bought this scope, if all was working ok, leave it alone until you get familiar with it.
I own two Zeiss scopes, the Universal and the Phomi II, dark field< phase<Brightfield and EPI reflected.
Lovely old scopes and both working well.
not bad for scopes over forty years old.
