I have just ordered a Labophot 2

#1 Post by KD Arvidsson » Wed May 13, 2020 8:41 pm

I just ordered a labophot 2 from ebay Germany. Seems to be in decent condition and now I get a microscope that I can build on. Will be come with DHL in a few days. Paid 650 euros for what I think is an ok price! //KD

The ergo (tilting) trinocular head is a plus. You can likely fit a LED lamp to the back of the epi intermediate piece to do some reflected microscopy.

Congratulations. Nice step up! So I guess it is official now --- you have been bitten by the microscopy bug :)

Congrats!
That looks to be a beauty, and as you say, ready to build upon.
Looking forward to it's arrival.

Price sounds fine to me, you've a couple of very nice 'extras' there, the ergo head and the incident-light fitting!

Very nice scope for sure! Definitely something to build your foreverscope on.

The objectives looks like a mixed bag, though. I believe I see one 100x 1.25 E achromat (black), and one which looks like a 100x 1.25 SC oil (silver barrel). Is that correct? What is the third objective?

The Nikon SC objective (if that is what it is) won't work well on that scope, unfortunately. Look here:
https://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ ... 864f8f5012

Nikon SC objectives where made for a student-grade scope which included some sort of correcting lenses in the binocular head. So it can only really be used on that exact microscope (and will probably be pretty bad on there as well).

So I think you will be on the hunt for some good 160mm Nikon CF objectives to complete that scope. But the good thing is that there are tons of great options!

Hi Viktor! Yes I understood that the lenses did not work so well. I have temporarily switched lenses from my Novel microscope that will work for so long. Thanks for your advice, I will be looking out for CF lenses in the future! Here is a picture over the objectives. KD

That 10x is a pretty good performer. I've used it quite a bit for macro photography. And the black 100x should work well too if you want to look at really small stuff (but it won't deliver very crisp images - only the very best 100x objectives do). It'll probably be some time before you get to the point where you will feel the need for a really high quality, high NA 100x oil objective.

So if you were to find a good 4x and 40x, and ideally a 20x, you'd be pretty well off.

Some of the cheap Chinese 4x objectives are really really good. You might be happy for a long time with the one you got with your old microscope.

But 40x is the magnification where you really start to see a difference between cheap and good objectives. Most 40x 0.65 achromats are kind of meh.

This listing looks a bit closer to you - and shows one of the better Nikon "CFN" objectives. Helpful that you show your location. This style is Plan with a slightly higher numerical aperture and is superb.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NIKON-PLAN-40X ... SwNxtexJyL

You can find a PDF brochure copy of "Nikon CF objectives." There were a dizzying array. I'd keep your 100x and the 10x, but try to upgrade the others to either "Plan Achromat" or even better the CFN type plan achromat shown above.

I'll second Pete's recommendation, that 40x CFN objective is very nice and often stay somewhat affordable. So do put that in your eBay watch list!

I hope you got the CFN 40x, because it ended at GBP 38.00 which is a real bargain.

Hey all! And Viktor, no I missed that opportunity unfortunately. I have had a little vacation for a while so the answer has been delayed. Right now I am waiting for a new camera that I have ordered because my cheap Chinese camera has broken. I also ordered an adapter and a T2 ring for my old Panasonic GH4 so I can't shoot or film at the moment. // KD
