What is face contrast?

#1 Post by Plasmid » Wed Jan 13, 2021 11:24 pm

Was the question I got from my spouse when she saw the purchase charge on the bank statement for a phase contrast kit

Im in search of a centering telescope for phase contrast, having never used one I really have no clue wether they are a one size fits all. The used phase kit i purchased did not come with one... Or centering screws so I guess I'll need those too. Also is the green filter a must for ph?

You don't need the green filter.

In general, centering/phase telescopes work across brands. You do need to match up tube diameters. The new kits are typically meant for standard tube sizes, with a couple adapters to fit 30mm and 30.5mm tubes.

I've seen a couple cases where an oddball model of phase telescope wouldn't focus properly down through a scope's entire optical train.

Perhaps your wife should feel reassured that you now only desire a face telescope?

Green filter is quite useful for black and white film photography if you feel like that's what you want to do

There's definitely some sort of face contrast involved

The Green filter will also help to get the max optical quality out of your system when using achromat phase objectives.

In practice I’m not using the filter that much as I prefer “color” when observing my (pond) samples.

Mind the length of some older phase telescopes though: i once crashed a prism in my Olympus head using an older(non Olympus) phase telescope

Is ot fair to assume that a standalone PH marking is positive ?
