What Microscope Is Needed To See Attached Images

#1 Post by MicroscopyLearning » Wed Feb 10, 2021 4:03 pm

Hello. I am starting out in microscopy and would like to know what kind of microscope can see images such as these:

search.creativecommons.org/photos/aeb5a02b-48e5-4fea-b84f-636523943e1e

I can not afford the time and money to buy and test multiple microscopes with no useful results, so I thought it best ask someone who have had experience with microscopy and what is needed to see certain images. Any advice or recommendations on what to buy is much appreciated!

Not sure about any other scope, but an Olympus BH2 with a 40x objective will give you this, e.g.,Euglena

Hi,
the last imaged specimen is stained, the second last was probably made with a microscope with DIC, the first image could be had with about any microscope.

Hello! Thank you for the information. That is very useful to know. I am starting out in microscopy so any information is useful to me.

A lot of what you can see depends on your skill in choosing lighting and setting your iris in the condenser. There is a lot more to this than just picking out a good microscope. You need to practice and you need to be inventive.

As always in such a quest, cost is a factor.
#1 , which is a relatively mediocre highly magnified image of scenedesmus, can be done with any microscope that has a 40X achromat objective , as noted but with an acceptable camera option needed. The image looks cropped possibly, so the camera option could be a simple one. Cameras, roughly double the cost of a cheap instrument, possibly triple. 300.00 and up probably.
#2 and 3 show considerable relief so are most likely as also noted by microbob done with DIC. One of them, perhaps another relief contrast technique but to image and photo to that quality you are at the 1500.00 level minimum, if you scored a really good deal.
#4 is in the same boat as #1 and can be attained with any microscope equipped with a 40X objective and an eyepiece camera. Could be done for around 200.00 if you purchased capably and used a phone camera.
