Books to start with

#1 Post by charlie » Mon Nov 16, 2015 8:17 pm

What books do you suggest for a total novice? (In my case to everything; I have no schooling in microscopy, biology or any other science.)

I should have asked earlier since I am a bit over my head with:

http://www.amazon.com/Microbiology-Prin ... 1118743164

I did just order:

Easy there. You can get two excellent objectives for that money!

This should sort you out: http://www.biology.uoc.gr/courses/BIOL4 ... s/book.pdf
Zeiss Standard WL (somewhat fashion challenged) & Wild M8
Olympus E-P2 (Micro Four Thirds Camera)

Check out "Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments" free on line PDF. Good practical source of basic info.

I also read "Exploring With the Microscope: A Book of Discovery & Learning" from the library about a year ago and, thanks for reminding me, I will go get it again.

Lastly I would recommend "Guide to Microlife" from the library or as a PDF download. Worth checking out.

Good luck.

Thanks Jim I did download "Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments" and bought "Exploring With the Microscope: A Book of Discovery & Learning."

"Guide to Microlife" as a PDF download has a bunch of different links. All want your credit card to get the "free" pdf download. I don't get why we can downlaod the book free in the first place? Who did you trust with your credit card info?

I did before Glen. I need more pictures and less stuff that hurts my head I guess. Maybe I can revisit it after some practical application of microscopy. :-)

I am pretty sure that I am done with it. Why don't I send it to you?

I'm in the UK - that's a kind offer though. :)
That <$5 book looks superb, but it's US based unfortunately - great value though!

John B, I got the "Guide to Microlife" from my local library and if you can, I suggest you do the same. The hard copy is IMO prohibitively expensive which is why I suggested the PDF.

Looks like you have gotten a lot of good suggestions from others. Now you have to read them all :)

They have managed to successfully get mail all the way to the UK from the USA now! I will send both books if you want? (It'd be nice if you helped out on the second one!) lol

I love Tony Pattinson's two self-published books, and have been greatly inspired by them. In fact, this is what got me started on macro photography in micro aquariums. UK amateur microscopists ROCK.

"Life in UK Freshwater"
"The Freshwater Microscopist"

See a book review here:

I reiterate that I will send you "Exploring With the Microscope: A Book of Discovery & Learning" if you wish John.
Reguarding "Fresh-water Invertebrates of the United States by Pennak" did you notice that shipping to the UK was only $4? For $8USD delivered, it is one massive book. :-)

Don't most beginner books talk about similar things? Maybe any microscopy book from your local libraries. Or even reading for free from the internet?

Thanks for the kind offer Charlie but I'm OK thanks. Neither is really in my area of interest but I really appreciate your generosity. :)

Perish the thought, young feller! Some of us old guys like a good old fashioned books and comfortable arm chair ... and occasional break from staring at flat screens.
