1980s Zeiss hobby scope-light issue

#1 Post by kelso321 » Tue Feb 14, 2017 10:23 pm

I have a question about this Zeiss scope that my friend asked me to post about. She inherited this scope and would like to use it for looking at fungi but the light doesn't work. any suggestions on where I should send her/ troubleshooting the light problem?

I appreciate any input!

I would start by checking the output of the power supply to the bulb. The second, and maybe more likely, is the bulb socket. I have replaced the original equipment with a 3W LED that is much better than the original.

I can't tell by the image if it has an internal or external power supply. Would seem to have had the On/Off/Dimmer switch removed.
Can you take and post a photo of the underneath of the base and of the plug and also one of the external power supply if there is one.

You should also cover the microscope to avoid dust.

May sound stupid but I haven't seen it mentioned yet: swap the bulb out before delving too much further into it. I've seen bulbs cease to function even though the filament looks perfect under a stereo scope. Had it happen again quite recently, in fact.

I second Lorez's recommendation to consider an LED transplant. I have been nothing but delighted with my AO 10 and AO 120 stands converted to LED. My Zeiss WL is likely to get it too one of these days.
Cheers,

I would agree with Kurt. First check the bulb and then look for loose connections.
