Of what use are frosted slides? Why would one want to use them?

Of what use are frosted slides? Why would one want to use them?

It's only the 'label-end' that's frosted - enabling them to be written on with a marker-pen which will remain (survive) right through processing without coming off - a conventional paper label may be stuck over this any time if the slide is to be kept.....
