I rather thought that the lens was to allow the use of the Optovar magnification changer on the larger stands. Since this device has both a physical, and optical effect, this lens compensates for that. The Standard 14 has no such device, hence the nosepiece has no lens. The dovetail will be different anyway, so you can't put the wrong one on.

Thank you for that info BTW I saw one of your previous posts pertaining to a Zeiss Universal question and in your image lineup one of the scopes looks like it has a 8 port turret?

The objective turret on there as well as the one next to it is a seven objective turret.
