Stereo Vs Biological Microscope Eyepieces

I'm looking into buying a cheap WF15X eyepiece with reticle from AliExpress but it's described as being for a stereo microscope.

Would it work fine with my biological microscope? Are there any differences in the two???

Stereo eyepieces tend to apply little or no correction. So for Nikon scopes, for instance, they are pretty compatible between their stereo and compound lines since neither requires much correction. But if you need correcting eyepieces for your objectives you will get poor results.

You need to look at the diameter as well. Biological microscope eyepieces tend to be 23.2mm and Stereoscope eyepieces 30mm

It's a trinocular I bought from eBay. Both Brunel Microscopes and GT Vision sell it under different names. It came with 2 WF15X eyepieces that measure 30mm at the base

The eyepiece reticle on AliExpress advertises a mounting diametre of 30mm

These may or may not be compensating. Stereo eyepieces direct from china should be pretty cheap, so it is probably worth experimenting.

If the binocular tubes on your microscope are 30mm (best to check again to be sure) and all you want is an eyepiece with a reticule to measure with,

then correction is not a problem as long as all you are going to do is exchange the eyepieces, measure, and then exchange back to your regular eyepieces.

Ideally the field of view on your regular eyepieces would be the same as on your measuring eyepiece - makes for easier viewing - but it is not strictly critical. The magnification however should be the same.

Yes, that was the plan. Exchange the 15X eyepiece, measure, and then exchange back to the regular 15X eyepieces. I use the scope for Mycology and measure spores, cystidia, etc using a streaming camera and specialist software (MycoCam, Piximétre, etc) and was just thinking of ordering the eyepiece with reticle for backup in case I have computer/camera issues.

I would want to know at what depth a third party, reticule eyepiece expects the intermediate image, and if that matches the microscope. If the image is deeper into the eyepiece tube than the eyepiece expects (a curse for Wild zombies), you can have a focused reticule or a parfocal microscope, but not both – unless you are willing to shorten the eyepiece tube.

Remember that a reticule has to be calibrated. To do that you need a stage micrometer. See links:

Oh, I forgot to mention they come in WF15X/15 and WF15X/16. Would the WF15X/15 be the one to go for?

I would suggest you contact Brunel on the link you provided ( http://www.brunelmicroscopes.co.uk/rese ... scope.html ) and ask them what the specs are on the 15x eyepiece on the SP200

I decided to just bite the bullet and purchased the WF15X/16. Should do the job in a pinch if I run into any technical difficulty and at £16 it's not a big deal if it's not up to the job
