I think the 10 means 10x (ten times) and the 160 means a finite tube length of 160mm ?
But the meaning of the 0.28, the - , the GS and the colour band I dont know.
I was surprised to find (while I was fiddling, honest guv it just came apart in me'ands !) that the inscribed bit was just a sleeve which screwed onto the main 'bit', presumably a common optic sold on to other assemblers, in this case "GS" ?
What have I got !

Re: Info on my objective please
The GS logo is 'Gillette and Siebert'. They were a UK company who produced good quality microscopes up until the late 80's. Their microscopes were mainly assembled from outsourced EU production parts. I have one of their scopes and the objectives are achromats like your example. I'm sure someone here will have more info if needed. 0.28 is the numerical aperture of the lens.

Here’s a little more about G & S

[no comic operas please]

.
P.S. ___ 160/- means 160mm tube length [as you deduced] and “not fussy about coverslip thickness”
The pale blue ring is just an ergonomic identifier for that power.

Too many 'projects'
Re: Info on my objective please
Thanks guys,
GS up to the 80's fits with when these bits were 'liberated' into the wild !
I had not given coverslips a thought, just as well that it is not fussy then. Now you mention it, the ones I have been using are from an unmarked box (and very fragile), but two other boxes are labeled No.0 and No.1 so that is for future investigations.
