Problem stitching images

I am new to this so there is probably a simple solution to this.

I am trying to stitch together two focus stacked images but at the area where the two images are blended together the two images are offset from each other and creates a double vision effect.
I'm guessing it has to do with the lens distortion or maybe from the focus stacking? Is there a way to correct for this somehow?

Original (focus stacked)Images:

Stitched:

I am using ZereneStacker with PMax for focus stacking and ImageJ with Dr. Stephan Preibisch's image stitching plugin for the stitching (Linear blending).
I would use ICE but I am on Mac OS X.

I have tried different stitching algorithms but the linear blending gives the best results.

Very interesting, Phil ... and frustrating, I'm sure !!

It appears that the top 'head' has registered correctly, but the little one has not.
... That suggests there must be a difference in scale between the two source images.

Mmm :?:

Perhaps the background is throwing the software off. You could try giving both a non distinctive background.

Thanks for the replies.
I tried your idea 75RR by quickly editing out the background of both images and stitching. This is the result:

Still does not seem to want to align the images properly.
I am think Michael may be right about the scaling issue. Not sure what could be causing that though :|

Was worth a try.

Had another look at both photos. Did a manual overlap.

Think the problem is that you changed the angle of the shot i.e. moved the camera on another plane.

In other words, if you had lowered the camera on the same plane to capture the rest of the subject rather than angling it, you probably would have been ok.

Note also that in order to stitch you need at least a 40% image overlap.

I also thought that might have been what happened but when repeating the process for another pair of images I get similar results.

I guess it's possible that I had bumped the camera each time I translated the view but it seems unlikely. The camera is pretty secure.
Maybe there is another free to use image stitching program that I could try and compare results?

Wait, I just read that last statement of yours.
I did not realize 40% overlap was required. That may be my problem!

I have just tried a rough comparative measurement, using a 600x600 pixel crop of your two source images, in the opening post.
IMG_2515.jpg
IMG_2515.jpg (52.14 KiB) Viewed 10402 times
IMG_2516.jpg
IMG_2516.jpg (54.3 KiB) Viewed 10402 times
The lower image is [linear measure] about 5% larger than the upper image.
