Circular oblique lighting + diffuse half mask

Here you can discuss different microscopic techniques and illumination methods, such as Brightfield, Darkfield, Phase Contrast, DIC, Oblique illumination, etc.

Circular oblique lighting + diffuse half mask

#1 Post by zzffnn » Sat Jun 10, 2017 3:17 pm

This is by far my favorite DIY illumination method (I did comparison and prefer it over regular COL, regular oblique, COL+pol and oblique+pol, ect.):

The diffuse half mask will reduce glare of COL, enhance contrast and produce gentle offset lighting (not unlike some lighting arrangement in portrait photography).

I hope someone here can try it and report back with his/her own experience.

zzffnn, thanks. I am definitely going to make and try a radial diffusion mask.

This would be fun to try but my condenser doesn't have a filter holder. So, I'm not sure how I'd implement something like this.

Pat,

You can use an oversized filter, put Blutak dots on its edge, then attach filter to condenser bottom. That works for all my condensers that do not have filter tray.

You would want to remove eyepiece and peek down eye tube to make sure the COL filter is centered and of about 70%-80% size of objective aperture. Close down condenser iris slightly will further increase contrast without killing too much resolution.
